What does learning look like in Foundation?

Learning in Foundation is a range of adult led and child led activities. Teacher lead sessions include phonics, maths and topic time. During provision (child led sessions) the children have access to outside and inside learning activities which are carefully and purposefully planned for, where the adults will interact, play, question and challenge the children so their learning is moved on.

There are a range of weekly lessons outside of the classroom such as welly walks, PE and music.

Day in a life of a Foundation Child

How does my child transition into school?

We understand your child’s transition into school is a very scary time for both parents and children, so we want to make sure this is as smooth as possible. Once your place has been confirmed you will be invited into school for a welcome to Oakgrove evening. During this evening, we will share a key information slideshow and you will receive an information pack including your child’s new teacher's name. This will then be a chance to speak to them.

After this initial meeting, you will receive a weekly email with a link to a story read by one of the Foundation team. In late July, we will be invited in for a transition day. This consists of 2 hours with the Foundation area where you will be able to meet the Foundation team and other children/parents.

In September, we will make a visit to your home. You will be given either a morning or afternoon slot where the class teacher and TA will visit to gain information about your child and answer any questions you may have. Your child will then be given a start date. We stagger the start dates of the children so 6 children from each class will start every other day. This supports the children settling into the setting and building relationships with other children and staff members.

Seesaw is an online app Foundation uses to communicate what your child does at school. You will receive an individual log in during home visits which you can share with family members. School will share photos, videos and weekly messages about your child’s learning. This is a great way to stay in touch with school and we recommend using this to pass on messages to the class teacher you. You are also able to upload photos and videos and share learning and celebrations with school too.

Lunches

In Foundation your child is able to receive a free school hot lunch. You are able to choose from: main meal, vegetarian, halal, jacket potato and sandwich option. To be able to book these, information will be given during home visits. You do have the option for your child to bring in a packed lunch from home too if preferred. If your child does not eat their lunch, salad cart options will be available and we will phone home.

What time does school start and finish?

Foundation open doors at 8.40 - 8.50 and collection is between 3.05-3.15

What snack and drinks do they have during the day?

A fruit snack is provided by school and milk (until they are 5 years old). Milk can be purchased after your child is 5 or they can use their water bottle. We ask for a water bottle to be provided daily for the children which they can access at any point during the day.
